Before You Make A Counter-Offer, Stop and Consider Your Options

Negotiating skills are very important in real estate transactions when selling your home. Your ultimate quest in those negotiations is to sell your home with the selling price that you desire.

When you get an offer that is less than your listing price, you will have a choice of accepting the offer "as is" or making a counter-offer.

Before making a counter-offer, consider:

  • Has the market improved or deteriorated since I listed my home? Real estate markets don't stay stagnant.
  • How many homes have sold since I listed my home?
  • How close am I to my moving deadline?
  • How long has my home been exposed to the market?
  • Are there more potential buyers who haven't seen my home?
Once you make a counter-offer, the buyer is no longer obligated to his original offer. So make sure that you only make a counter-offer when important when important issues are at stake.

If you try to micro-negotiate small things, you might just lose your buyer and your sale.
